Why vegans, athletes, seniors and pregnant women can use extra omega-3

guido guido

Measurements show the body performs best at an omega-3 index of roughly 8 to 11%, while the average sits around 4.5%. Four groups structurally measure lower and benefit most from a deliberate look at their intake. Recognise yourself in one of them? Then read along for a moment.

1. Vegans and vegetarians

Low values are strikingly common with plant-based diets, even otherwise well balanced ones. The reason: plant sources mainly deliver ALA, and conversion into the active forms EPA and DHA is inefficient. For this group especially, taking DHA and EPA directly matters, and that is possible fully plant-based through algae oil. Also read a vegan diet without deficiencies.

2. Athletes

Intensive training demands a lot from your body and burns through nutrients. In the measurements of research institute OmegaQuant, athletes average lower omega-3 values. A daily base of 250 mg of DHA and EPA, at which EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function, therefore fits naturally into a serious sports routine, alongside sufficient protein and recovery.

3. Seniors

Healthy ageing starts with maintaining the foundation. The authorised claims target exactly the functions that matter with age: EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function, and DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision. For seniors we recommend Vrill, with phospholipids and astaxanthin.

4. Pregnant women

During pregnancy and breastfeeding an additional need applies: maternal DHA intake contributes to the normal development of the brain and eyes of the foetus and breastfed infant, at 200 mg of DHA daily on top of the general 250 mg. At the same time, caution with fish is advised because of possible contaminants. Algae oil resolves that dilemma. Everything about it in omega-3 during pregnancy.

Do not guess, measure

Vegan, athlete, senior or expecting: your omega-3 status cannot be guessed. With the omega-3 index self-test, independently analysed by OmegaQuant, you will know your value within two weeks. Measure again after three to four months and you will see the effect of your changes in black and white.

From EPA & DHA to DHA to Vrill: every group has a fitting plant-based solution.

Good for you. Good for the ocean.

Authorised health claims (EFSA): EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function (250 mg/day); DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision (250 mg/day); maternal DHA intake contributes to the normal development of the brain and eyes of the foetus and breastfed infant (200 mg/day extra).
