Dosage and intake
Dosage and intake
To support health in combination with a healthy diet, we recommend you take at least one of our vegan omega-3 capsules per day. Taking one Testa Omega-3 capsule per day is equivalent to eating two fatty fish per week. In some cases, physicians recommend a larger omega 3 daily intake. The EFSA (EUROPEAN FOOD SAFETY ASSOCIATION) advises not to take more than 5 grams of omega-3s per day. Ten capsules of Testa algae Omega-3 supplement contain 4.5 grams of omega-3s in total.
*Dietary supplements should not replace a varied and healthy diet.
When should I take my dose?
Taking the supplement with meals that contain fat is better for absorption. More of the Omega-3 ends up in your ‘system’ and over time, more remains in your body when you consume the algae oil during a meal.
However, if you experience belching after taking the algae oil, we recommend that you take it before a meal. The food ‘helps’ to make the capsule find its way into the stomach faster.
Can I take more than 1 capsule (RDA) per day?
Yes.
The EFSA (EUROPEAN FOOD SAFETY AUTHORITY) recommends taking no more than 5 grams of Omega-3 per day for various health claims. Ten capsules of Testa Omega-3 contain 4.5 grams. There are therapists who recommend more than 1 capsule and that is not a problem, as long as you stay under an intake of 5 grams of Omega-3 per day.
Is Testa Omega-3 suitable for pets?
Omega-3 can be a good supplement for a healthy skin and coat condition for horses, ponies, dogs and cats.
Vitamin E (d-Alpha-Tocopherol) has been added to our DHA+EPA capsules, which has a beneficial effect on allergies and immune diseases.
1 capsule contains > 450mg Omega-3 fatty acids
of which > 250mg pure DHA
and > 125 mg of pure EPA
The ideal dose of Omega-3 fatty acids for your animal is around 40 mg per kg of body weight per day. You can administer this directly into the mouth or mix it into the food. If the animal does not want to intake the capsule, you can also cut it open and only administer the contents.
Stay healthy during pregnancy with Testa Omega-3
A pregnancy is a special time in your life. A time when you want to take the best possible care of yourself as well as the baby growing inside you. Ensuring an adequate intake of Omega-3 is an excellent way to look after yourself and your developing baby.
Indispensable
Omega-3 consists of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential for good health. EPA and DHA fatty acids, for example, are beneficial to normal functioning of the heart and brains. In addition, DHA also supports your child’s visual and brain development for up to 12 months.
Better for you
Omega-3 fatty acids are indispensable for a healthy pregnancy. But our body does not produce these fatty acids by itself. Choosing Testa, you can be confident of getting a 100% plant-based Omega-3 supplement that enables you to take full advantage of all the health benefits Omega-3 has to offer. Testa does not extract Omega-3 from fish but from cultivated algae. This means Testa Omega-3 is entirely free of heavy metals, dioxins and PCBs. So it’s better for you and your child. And because this production of Omega-3 does not affect fish stocks, it’s also better for the world.
Can I open the capsule?
Yes, you can cut the capsule open with sharp scissors or a sharp kitchen knife or pierce it with a needle.
You can mix the oil with a green juice, coconut or almond drink, yogurt with, for example, lemon flavor or a smoothie with banana and almond milk. In such liquids the oil mixes well and the taste is neutral.
Is Testa Omega-3 algae oil suitable for children?
Yes, algae oil is very beneficial for children.
Like adults, they can take 1 daily soft gel capsule. Although children are smaller, 1 capsule per day is a good dose of omega 3 for kids. We advise children to wet the capsule first, as this makes swallowing easier.
Children mainly benefit from DHA to support their growth. Thus, our algae DHA supplement (containing smaller capsules than DHA+EPA capsules) is the most appropriate form of omega 3 for kids.
Recommended daily amount of Omega-3
Omega-3s are essential fatty acids, so we must get them by adjusting our diet to the needs of our body.
The question of how many omega 3 fatty acids you should get per day is answered differently by different health organizations. The recommended daily amount of DHA and EPA that they recommend varies from about 200 to 500 mg per day for a healthy adult. For example, the Nutrition Center advises adults to take in 200 mg of omega 3 fatty acids per day.
However, our standard diet often does not provide us with this amount of omega 3. If you want to get as close as possible to the recommended daily amount of DHA and EPA through your diet, then according to the Nutrition Center it is best to eat a portion of (fatty) fish every week. The World Gastroenterology Organization even recommends 3 to 5 portions of fish per week to get enough DHA and EPA.
For many of us, fish is not a weekly recurring food in the diet, otherwise 90% of the population would not suffer from an omega-3 deficiency. In order to supplement this deficiency, many people turn to nutritional supplements. This explains the popularity of fish oil capsules, the best-known omega-3 nutritional supplements on the market. To support health in combination with a healthy diet, we recommend 1 capsule per day. 1 capsule of omega-3 per day is equivalent to eating fatty fish twice a week. In some cases, therapists recommend larger amounts.
The EFSA (European Food Safety Association) advises not to take more than 5 grams of omega-3 per day. 10 capsules of Testa Omega-3 contain a total of 4.5 grams of omega-3.
Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and healthy diet.
Frequent Questions About Daily Omega-3 Intake
Is it okay to take omega-3 every day?
Yes, most health experts agree that daily omega-3 intake is not only safe, but beneficial when taken within recommended limits. In fact, regular intake helps maintain stable levels in the body and supports ongoing cellular functions.
Can I take omega-3 without eating fish?
Absolutely. Algae oil is a direct source of EPA and DHA—the same fatty acids found in fish—because that’s where fish get theirs from in the first place. Choosing algae-based supplements is a smart and sustainable alternative.
What happens if I don’t get enough omega-3?
Omega-3 deficiency can manifest in many subtle ways: dry skin, brain fog, mood swings, and cardiovascular strain. While symptoms can vary, the long-term risks of deficiency may go unnoticed until more serious health issues arise.
Can I take too much omega-3?
While omega-3s are generally safe, taking very high doses (over 5 grams daily) may lead to side effects like thinning blood. Always follow the label and your healthcare provider’s guidance. More is often better, but not in all cases.
Is one capsule really enough?
For general wellness and prevention, one high-quality capsule like Testa’s DHA + EPA is sufficient. In some situations, such as pregnancy or specific deficiencies, a healthcare provider may recommend higher doses.
The Testa Advantage
Unlike fish oil, which can oxidize and leave behind an unpleasant aftertaste, Testa Omega-3 capsules are made from algae grown on land under carefully controlled conditions. That means no fishy burps, no ocean pollutants, and no contribution to overfishing. It’s pure, sustainable, and aligned with a forward-thinking approach to health.
Each softgel is designed to provide a consistent dose of DHA and EPA without the toxins, animal ingredients, or environmental consequences associated with traditional marine sources. Whether you’re vegan, flexitarian, or simply health-conscious, Testa makes it easy to meet your omega-3 goals.
Whether you’re working toward better heart health, sharper focus, or simply covering your nutritional bases, getting your daily dose of omega-3 is one of the smartest habits you can build. With one small, plant-based capsule per day, you can support your body, and protect the oceans too.
Omega 3 health claims
What are health claims?
A health claim is any statement about a relationship between food and health. The Commission authorises different health claims provided they are based on scientific evidence and can be easily understood by consumers. See the difference in health claims interpretation in America and Europe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_claim.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is responsible for evaluating the scientific evidence supporting health claims.
Types of Health Claims
The so-called ‘Function Health Claims’ (or Article 13 claims).
Relating to the growth, development and functions of the body;
Referring to psychological and behavioural functions;
On slimming or weight-control.
The so-called ‘Risk Reduction Claims’ (or Article 14(1)(a) claims) on reducing a risk factor in the development of a disease.
For example: “Plant stanol esters have been shown to reduce blood cholesterol. Blood cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease”
Health ‘Claims referring to children’s development’ (Article 14(1)(b) claims).
For example: “Vitamin D is needed for the normal growth and development of bone in children”

Is the claim about DHA during pregnancy also authorised?
Our Testa Omega-3 algae oil is often taken during pregnancy. The European Food Safety Authority also authorised a health claim concerning pregnancy/breastfed infants:
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) maternal intake contributes to the normal brain development of the foetus and breastfed infants.
Information shall be given to pregnant and lactating women that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 200 mg of DHA in addition to the recommended daily intake for Omega-3 fatty acids for adults, i.e.: 250 mg DHA and EPA. The claim can be used only for food which provides a daily intake of at least 200 mg DHA.
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) maternal intake contributes to the normal development of the eye of the foetus and breastfed infants.
Information shall be given to pregnant and lactating women that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 200 mg of DHA in addition to the recommended daily intake for Omega-3 fatty acids for adults, i.e.: 250 mg DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The claim can be used only for food which provides a daily intake of at least 200 mg DHA.
Testa Omega-3 also has a DHA product with 250 mg of DHA only.
One capsule DHA/EPA and one capsule with only DHA would also be sufficient to be beneficial according to the EFSA health claims.

Product information, ingredients, production process and packaging
What are the benefits and ingredients of vegan krill oil?
Testa Vrill DHA + EPA contains two additional active substances in addition to DHA and EPA omega-3s: phospholipids and Astaxanthin. The ratio of active ingredients is different to our DHA + EPA product and therefore, for Vrill, we recommend 2 capsules per day (see below):
Our recommended daily dose of 2 softgels of Vrill Omega-3 contains at least:
– DHA (docosahexaenoic acid): 280 mg
– EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid): 160 mg
– Astaxanthin: 1500 mcg
– Phosphatidylcholine: 230 mg
In comparison, 1 softgel Testa Omega-3 DHA + EPA contains at least:
– DHA (docosahexaenoic acid): 250 mg
– EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid): 125 mg
What is krill oil?
Krill oil comes from small, shrimp-like crustaceans. Most krill oil is extracted from Antarctic krill, which live in the cold waters around Antarctica. Krill feed on algae and are in turn food for fish, whales, penguins, and seals.
How is krill oil different from fish oil?
Krill oil is an animal alternative to fish oil, but due to its unique chemical composition, is of higher quality. Krill oil, aside from its omega-3s, also contains high-quality phospholipids and the powerful antioxidant astaxanthin, which help the human body absorb it more easily. Many medical professionals recommend krill oil to their clients.
What are the advantages of Vrill over algae oil?
In addition to containing a high daily dose of omega 3 fatty acids (with a daily intake of 2 capsules), Testa Vegan Krill Oil DHA + EPA is also rich in phospholipids and astaxanthin. As a result, the oil is better absorbed by the body.
Phospholipids are important building blocks for our cell membranes. The cell membrane is the outer covering of every living cell in our body. All substances that enter or leave the cell must pass through the membrane. Maintaining all of our cell membranes in good condition is therefore essential for good health.
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid made by plankton, algae and certain plants, fungi and bacteria to protect themselves from the harmful effects of sunlight and oxygen; the highest concentration of astaxanthin is found in microalgae. Astaxanthin is a powerful and versatile antioxidant that can protect our cells from external damage even more effectively than vitamin E.
Difference between vegan krill oil and algae oil
What is the difference between Testa DHA + EPA and Testa vegan krill oil?
Testa Vegan Krill Oil DHA & EPA Omega-3 contains, in addition to the active omega-3 fatty acids DHA + EPA, two additional active substances: astaxanthin and phospholipids. The last two active substances mentioned have the effect that it is better absorbed into the blood.
Because these capsules have two additional active substances and therefore also a different ratio of DHA + EPA per capsule, we recommend taking 2 capsules per day for Vrill. This means that a box of Vrill Omega-3s will last you less time than a box of our DHA or DHA & EPA Algae Oil capsules.
What are the benefits of our Vegan Krill Oil Vrill?
1. Testa Vegan Krill Oil DHA + EPA is, in addition to a high daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids, namely 280 mg DHA and 160 mg EPA (with a daily intake of 2 capsules), also rich in phospholipases and astaxanthin. This allows the oil to be better absorbed by the body.
2. Phospholipids are important building blocks for our cell membranes. The cell membrane is the outer boundary of every living cell in our body. All substances that need to enter or leave the cell must pass through the membrane. A good condition of all our cell membranes is therefore essential for good health.
3. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid made by plankton, algae and certain plants, fungi and bacteria to protect themselves from the harmful effects of sunlight and oxygen; the highest concentration of astaxanthin available in nature is found in microalgae. Astaxanthin is a powerful and versatile antioxidant that can protect our cells from external damage even more effectively than vitamin E.
Why Would You Choose Vrill Over Regular Algae Oil?
While both algae oil and vegan krill oil deliver DHA and EPA, they offer slightly different benefits depending on your health priorities:
• Algae Oil (DHA + EPA): Ideal for general wellness, pregnancy, brain development, and heart function. Simple, clean, and sustainable, this is the baseline omega-3 capsule for most Testa users.
• Vrill (DHA, EPA + Antioxidants): Offers additional support for people who want enhanced absorption and antioxidant protection. Great for those with increased oxidative stress, such as athletes, people with demanding lifestyles, or those seeking healthy aging support.
If you’re looking to cover your basic omega-3 needs in the most efficient and eco-friendly way, Testa Algae Oil DHA + EPA is a perfect daily solution. But if you’re seeking more from your supplement—especially when it comes to cell health and antioxidant defense—Vrill may be your go-to!
What Makes Testa Vrill Different From Traditional Krill Oil?
Unlike traditional krill oil that is harvested from shrimp-like marine animals in Antarctic waters, Testa Vrill is 100% vegan. It’s made without harming marine ecosystems or animals, and it’s free from mercury, microplastics, and ocean pollutants. Our Vrill capsules are developed with algae-sourced DHA and EPA, plant-based phospholipids, and astaxanthin, making it a true alternative with no compromise.
Plus, many people avoid krill and fish oil for ethical reasons. By choosing Testa Vrill, you’re supporting a supplement that’s in line with plant-based values and environmental responsibility.
Who Should Take Vrill?
Vrill is ideal for:
• People who want extra antioxidant protection
• Those under high mental or physical stress
• Adults looking to support graceful aging and cellular integrity
• Anyone seeking high bioavailability and fast-acting absorption
That said, both Testa DHA + EPA and Vrill offer excellent support for heart, brain, and eye health. It’s simply a matter of which formula fits best with your goals and lifestyle. Still unsure which one’s right for you? Start with your needs: everyday wellness or optimized performance? Either way, you’re choosing a supplement that protects both your health and that of our oceans.
Algae oil
Sustainable solution for fish oil capsules
The only reason that fish contain Omega-3 is that fish eat algae. Therefore, the good fatty acids which we need originate in algae and not in fish.
So why should we intake fish oil capsules? We can very easily remove this extra step in our Omega-3 food chain and obtain the fatty acids directly from algae instead of from fish.
Algae oil capsules have the following advantages compared to fish oil capsules:
- Sustainable choice: you are not contributing to over-fishing and unnecessary by-catch;
- 100% vegetable capsules, so also suitable for vegetarians and vegans;
- Where fish oil must be cleaned of harmful substances, algae oil is pure in and of itself.
If you choose algae oil capsules, you are not only opting for your own health but also for a healthy fish population and a healthy environment.
Heart, brains and eyes
Most sources of omega-3 DHA and EPA are not plant-based and are therefore not suitable for vegetarians and vegans. For vegetarians and vegans it is particularly important to take extra DHA and EPA because ALA can only be converted into DHA and EPA to a limited extent. Omega-3 based on algae oil is one of the few natural animal-free sources of the much-needed DHA and EPA.
Omega-3 from algae
Omega-3 DHA + EPA fatty acids are mainly found in oily fish, but if you eat little to no fish it is difficult to take in enough Omega-3. Algae are high in Omega-3 and are the superfood for fish. Testa Omega-3 made from algae is a vegetable and especially environmentally friendly alternative for fish or fish oil capsules.
Why Algae Oil?
People often think of fish oil when talking about Omega-3, but is fish oil really healthy for you and your environment? There are 5 reasons to use Testa Omega-3 algae oil instead of fish oil:
- Algae oil is pure, whereas fish oil is contaminated with quicksilver, PCBs and dioxins.
- Algae oil is made through a simple production process, in contrast to fish oil, which requires many chemical treatments in order to remove the contamination.
- Algae oil is fresh, whereas many fish oil supplements turn out to be rancid. No surprise that many mothers experience so called fish belching (burps). Read more about what Testa does to offer a fresh product?
- Algae are being grown on land, whereas fish oil does a lot of damage to our oceans. Did you know that currently 25% of the global catch is being used to produce fish oil products?
- Algae contain over 18% Omega-3, whereas in fish, this is no more than 0.1% to (in very special cases) 3%. This means that it takes 38 fat fish in order to produce 60 capsules.
Plant-based omega 3
An increasing number of people prefer to eat fewer or no animal products at all. And that’s no longer as hard as it used to be as today the market offers more and more substitute products, packed with plant-based vitamins, fibre and minerals. And Testa offers the ultimate plant-based Omega-3 supplement, made from algae.
Indispensable
Omega-3 consists of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential for good health. EPA and DHA fatty acids, for example, are beneficial to normal functioning of the heart and brains. In addition, research shows that DHA also helps to keep your eyes fit.
Better for you
Anyone who prefers to maintain a plant-based diet must make sure to get sufficient Omega-3 fatty acids. But our body does not produce these fatty acids by itself. That’s why a daily intake of Omega-3 fatty acids is recommended. Choosing Testa, you can be confident of getting a 100% plant-based Omega-3 supplement that enables you to take full advantage of all the health benefits Omega-3 has to offer. Testa does not extract Omega-3 from fish but from cultivated algae. So it’s better for you. And because this production of Omega-3 does not affect fish stocks, it’s also better for the world.
DHA vs EPA: What’s The Difference?
Testa Omega-3 offers two main algae omega-3 supplements, namely Testa DHA & EPA Omega-3 Algae Oil and Testa DHA Omega-3 Algae Oil. Let’s take a look at the differences between DHA and EPA, so you can determine which is right for you!
Testa Omega-3 Vegan DHA+EPA
This is a complete omega-3 product, suitable for everyone. One capsule per day provides powerful support for the heart, brain, and eyes. Testa Omega-3 DHA+EPA contains at least 450 mg of algae omega-3s per serving, of which over 250 mg of vegan DHA and over 125 mg of vegan EPA are guaranteed per capsule. This product is perfectly suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
DHA vs EPA – these two fatty acids fulfill different roles within the body. If your goal is to reduce cellular inflammation, then you probably need more EPA. Those struggling with depression, ADHD, brain trauma, or other cognitive issues are advised to maintain high levels of EPA in the blood. Research shows that about 4 grams per day of DHA and EPA lowers systolic blood pressure (top pressure) by about 4.5 mm Hg in people with high blood pressure who are not taking any other medications (Source: het Voedingscentrum, the Netherlands).
Testa Omega-3 DHA
…is suitable for those who are only interested in the benefits of DHA omega-3 fatty acids, such as eye and brain health. Testa Omega-3 DHA contains over 250 mg of algae omega-3 in the form of algae oil DHA. It is an ideal supplement for pregnant women when taken in combination with Testa Omega-3 DHA + EPA, because of the additional benefits that this combination provides for the fetus or infant.
DHA has a beneficial effect on fetal and infant development.
DHA makes membranes (especially those in the brain) a lot more fluid than EPA does. This increase in membrane fluidity is critical for synaptic vesicles and for the retina. Nevertheless, you can cover all your omega-3 fatty acid needs by taking both DHA and EPA at the same time.

Production process Testa Omega-3
Origin and production of Testa Omega-3 algae oil
Schizochytrium sp. is a micro algae that occurs in the mangrove forests in the South Pacific Ocean. It produces an oil rich in Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of EPA and DHA. The oil has been used for years in food or as a food supplement.
Schizochytrium is not produced in ponds, but cultivated in sterile fermentors under controlled conditions. As there is no impact from ocean pollution, the oil is free from heavy metals (such as mercury), dioxins and PCBs, that often occur in fish and fish oil.
A fermentation process is applied. Water and nutrients are added to the algae concentrate and the algae are being cultivated under certain circumstances. Fermentation is a widely used food production method.
The oil is received from the algae through a solvent-less process. The algae culture is pasteurised (cooked) so that the oil separates from the cells. The oil is then skimmed off the water phase. The oil is treated under as mild as possible conditions and mostly under vacuum to avoid contact with oxygen. Then approved antioxidants are added to the oil to provide the stability. And finally the DHA and EPA percentages may be standardised by the addition of food grade vegetable oil.
Is the algae oil free from toxins and does it contain BMAA?
Is the algae oil free from toxins?
Yes! The algae we use (Schizochytrium sp.) is not grown in an open pond but cultivated in sterile fermenters under controlled conditions. Since there is no impact of environmental pollution on the algae it is free from residues like heavy metals, mercury, pesticides or dioxines, as found in many natural fish oils.
Does it contain BMAA?
It is not legal to claim BMAA-free on the packaging, because it is irrelevant. Just like gluten free can not be freely claimed. We want to emphasize that BMAA cannot be found in Testa Omega-3.
BMAA is known for cyanobacteria / blue green algae. It finds its way in the food chain through mussels and shrimps. Our algae are grown in clean water in closed tanks under GMP* norms.

Facts and figures about fish catch
Is 27% of the worldwide fish catch industrially processed to fish oil and meal?
Yes, in fact, of the some 20 million metric tons of fish caught annually around the world for uses other than consuming, 90 percent are fish that are perfectly good to eat, such as sardines, anchovies and herring, a new study finds. About 27 percent of ocean fish caught became fishmeal or fish oil. And most of the fish species were either food-grade (used as food somewhere in the world) or prime-food-grade (widely accepted as food everywhere)
Are there solutions for the enormous amount of fish catch?
Yes there are solutions that are much better and without any ocean footprint. Fish cannot produce Omega-3, they get it from algae. Just like Testa Omega-3 does! And even though the fastest growing Omega-3 market is that of human consumption, the majority still is used as food for our fish and livestock e.g. pigs and chicken. Also for this market there are already solutions with algae.
Do we really need 36 herrings or other oily fish for 60 Omega-3 capsules?
Yes, this amount is indeed ” necessary ” to take Omega-3 oil daily for 2 months.
Calculation:
- 1 Testa Omega-3 capsule contains 450mg Omega-3, thus 60 capsules contain 27g of Omega-3.
- 1 herring on the Dutch market weighs on average 68g and contains on average 1.1% extractable Omega-3. Thus 750mg Omega-3 per herring.
If we then divide the 27g of Omega-3 of 1 Testa Omega-3 supplement by 750mg of 1 herring one can see that 36 herrings are used.

Organic?
No, Testa Omega-3 is not organic. Algae oil is not produced in an agricultural environment and the principles of organic agriculture therefore do not apply here. However, the algae oil is produced under very controlled conditions, making our oil very pure and fresh compared to fish- or krill oil.
Why does Testa Omega-3 use blisters as packaging?
We pack the capsules in blisters, because this provides the best protection for the capsules and we can therefore guarantee the shelf life better than any algae oil brand. The Omega-3 fatty acids are sensitive to light, UV radiation, moisture and especially air.
The blisters are recyclable and the boxes are made of FSC® certified cardboard.

Is the corn starch GMO-free?
Yes! Our product is completely GMO-free! GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. Genetic modification involves the manual and targeted alteration of the genes of an organism by humans and is part of gene technology.
A modified corn starch (E1440) is used to make the gel capsule. This corn starch (Hydropropylated starch) is not genetically modified but just modified to obtain more amylopektin than the natural starch. It acts as a thickening agent for the material of the capsule. Modified corn starch is therefore not a genetically modified corn starch (not GMO).
Can I be allergic to algae oil?
So far we did not receive a complaint about any allergic reactions to our products!
The algae oil contains the following ingredients:
- algae oil from schizochytrium sp.
- high oleic sunflower oil
- d-alpha tocopherol
- rosemary extract
- antioxidants (tocopherols and ascorbyl palmitate)
- acidity regulator (sodium carbonate).
The vegan gel capsules are made of:
- glycerol
- modified corn starch
- carrageenan
What is carrageenan?
Carrageenan is a polysaccharide derived from red seaweed, particularly a species known as Irish moss (Chondrus crispus). It’s been used for centuries in various cultures for its gelling, thickening, and stabilizing properties—particularly in food preparation. Today, it plays a key role in the food and supplement industry, especially for those looking for effective plant-based alternatives.
Why We Use Carrageenan at Testa
At Testa, we use carrageenan to form the shell of our 100% plant-based softgel capsules. This ingredient is not mixed in with the algae oil itself but is only part of the outer capsule structure. Specifically, each capsule contains around 60 milligrams of carrageenan in its shell. Without it, the capsule would be too hard or brittle, making it difficult to swallow and store effectively.
Is Carrageenan Safe?
Carrageenan is approved for use in food and supplements by regulatory organizations across the globe, and has been a common food additive for over a hundred years. You’ll find it in items like dairy-free milks, yogurts, desserts, and even toothpaste, where it helps stabilize and bind the ingredients.
A Plant-Based Alternative to Gelatin
For vegan and vegetarian consumers, carrageenan plays a particularly important role—it is currently the only plant-based ingredient that can form a softgel capsule. Most conventional softgels are made from gelatin, a material made from animal collagen. Our use of carrageenan allows us to stay committed to clean, ocean-friendly, and completely plant-based nutrition.
What If You’re Sensitive to Carrageenan?
We understand that some individuals may be sensitive to carrageenan, experiencing digestive discomfort or simply preferring not to consume it. While the vast majority of people tolerate it well, there’s an easy workaround. You can use a clean pin or needle to gently prick the capsule and squeeze out the oil inside. This allows you to skip the capsule entirely and still get all the essential omega-3s your brain and body love.
The oil has a mild taste on its own, but many of our customers enjoy mixing it into yogurts, smoothies, soups, or even salad dressings to mask the flavor while still reaping the full nutritional benefits. Just one capsule contains your daily dose of DHA and EPA, derived from algae—not fish—making it ideal for anyone committed to a sustainable, vegan, or ocean-conscious lifestyle.
At Testa, transparency and consumer empowerment are at the heart of what we do. Whether you take your omega-3s straight from the capsule or get creative with how you consume them, we want to make it easy for you to nourish your body and protect the ocean all at once.
Pregnancy and rosemary
Our products are completely safe for pregnant women. There is only a very small amount of rosemary in our algae oil.
Extracts of rosemary per capsule:
Carnosol: 0,5% = 0,015 mg per capsule
Carnosinezuur: 1% = 0,03 mg per capsule
Therapeutic use of rosemary is not advised when you are pregnant. But the Rosemary in our capsules is not therapeutic, it is used as an anti-oxidant, there is only a little bit of rosemary present in each capsule.
What is rosemary extract?
The extract from rosemary contains carnosinic acid, which is a strong antioxidant. It does not contain the Rosemary aroma. The potential of rosemary to preserve food which contains lipids is known for a long time. Therefore rosemary is often added to fish, salami, salad oil and other food.
Rosemary extract is a registered and safe food additive. It is extracted from natural rosemary.
What is Ascorbyl Palmitate?
Ascorbyl palmitate is an antioxidant. It is made of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) and palmitic acid, which both occur naturally in many fruits or vegetables. It is widely used for the conservation of fats and oils. In the human body it gets broken-up into Ascorbic acid and Palmitic acid again.
What is sodium carbonate?
Sodium carbonate is added to the capsule shell material as an acid regulator. The amount is very small, in the capsule it is comparable to the amount of carbonate in a glass of mineral water.
Are vitamins added to the algae oil?
We have added Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) to our DHA+EPA product.
There are two reasons to why Testa Omega-3 adds extra vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) to the product DHA+EPA:
- Essential fatty acids are vulnerable for oxidation and Vitamin E protects the product against this since vitamin E functions as an antioxidant;
- When the free radicals (pro-oxidants) outnumber the antioxidants, this can lead to a state called oxidative stress. Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
Is there iodine in the capsules?
The capsule does not contain a significant amount of iodine. The microalgae Schizochytrium we use does not accumulate iodine (as for example seaweed does).
Furthermore, the algae are cultured in tanks in a closed environment.
A batch analysis in 2016 showed the iodine level was 0.74 mg / kg. This comes down to 0,00061716 mg per capsule.
Why does Testa Omega-3 contain sunflower oil?
There is a small amount of sunflower oil in the capsule (3%) and this is necessary for processing the algae oil.
The sunflower oil Testa Omega-3 uses has a high oleic content (84%) from special hybrids of sunflowers. Therefore, linoleic acid content is much lower (6-9%) than regular sunflower oil.
Per capsule we have 28 mg Omega-6 and 450 mg Omega-3, or a ratio of 1: 16.
- In krill oil, it is 1:7
- with sardine oil 1:2.2
- farmed salmon 1:5
- and with anjovis oil 1:10.
How much algae oil, Omega-3, DHA and EPA contains every softgel capsule?
1 softgel capsule consists of 834 mg algae oil, this capsule contains:
- at least 125 mg of Omega-3 EPA
- at least 250 mg of Omega-3 DHA
- together at least 410 mg of Omega-3
One of the values is always higher and therefore designated as at least 410 mg of Omega-3. Testa Omega-3 is a natural product and therefore every batch is slightly different.
The active substance of the raw material DPA brings the total amount to at least 450 mg Omega-3 (DHA + EPA + DPA). DPA = Docosapentaenoic acid.

The capsules smell, taste or look different from what I am used to
Algae oil is a natural product and due to the nature of the oil some variability in the clarity of the product has been observed. With long-term storage at cooled temperature conditions, some semi-solid material may appear in the oil. This is not expected to adversely affect the quality of the product, but the oil must be mixed well to re-suspend this material before use.
Because fish get their Omega-3 from consuming algae, the smell and taste of fish and algae oil are related to each other.
Can I keep the capsules in the refrigerator?
Rather not.
Even if you live in a warm region, we advise you not to store the product in the refrigerator. If you have kept the capsules in the refrigerator, the product may become cloudy because the oil crystallizes.
Can I still use the capsules if they have been exposed to different temperatures?
Yes.
In the worst case, the shelf life will be slightly lower. Make sure you consume the product well within the expiration date.

Testa Omega-3 does everything to protect the product as well as possible against oxidation
- we add up to 4 times as much vitamin E (antioxidant) to Testa Omega-3 DHA+EPA;
Unlike the bulk of our algae oil competitors:
- we produce small batches all year round, so we always have a fresh product at our disposal;
- we use an airtight blister package so that each capsule is well protected against external influences.
Omega 3 fatty acids
Omega 3-fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid structure. The body cannot make ALA itself, which makes ALA an essential fatty acid. It must be taken from food. The body uses ALA to form DHA and EPA, but this conversion is limited, meaning DHA and EPA can also be considered essential fatty acids.
Estimates of the percentage of ALA that can be converted into DHA and EPA range from 0.3% to 10% for EPA. The conversion into DHA is much lower; likely around 0.01% of the consumed ALA.
ALA is a plant-based omega-3 structure. DHA and EPA are mainly found in algae, and due to the algae consumed by fish, they’re also present in fish.
Sadly, excessive fish are being caught and processed into omega-3 fish oil and fish meal. At Testa Omega-3, we find this to be unnecessary because we can obtain the omega-3s directly from algae.
DHA
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that is a primary structural component of the human brain, cerebral cortex, skin, and retina.
DHA’s omega-3 fatty acid structure is a carboxylic acid (-oic acid) with a 22-carbon chain (docosa- is Greek for 22) and six (hexa-) cis double bonds (-en-);[2] with the first double bond located at the third carbon from the Omega end.
EPA
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; also icosapentaenoic acid) is another omega-3 fatty acid. In physiological literature, it is given the name 20:5(n-3).
EPA’s omega-3 fatty acid structure structure is a carboxylic acid with a 20-carbon chain and five cis double bonds; the first double bond is located at the third carbon from the Omega end. Eicosapentaenoic acid can also be formed from alpha-linolenic acid, but this conversion is not optimal. It is the precursor of important physiological substances in the body, the series 3 eicosanoids: prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and thromboxanes.
The European and American Food Safety Authorities have approved health claims for DHA with EPA for Heart Health and DHA for Brain and Eye Health. (View Testa’s health claims here.)
The Ideal Omega 3:6 Ratio
Our nutrition contains too much omega-6, which is omega-3’s counterpart. The omega-3:6 fatty acid ratio in our current diets is close to 1:20.
The main cause is our use of soy, sunflower, and corn products in livestock feed, which ends up in our milk and meat. Many vegetarian products also contain these omega-6 sources. An ideal ratio is closer to 1:3 or 1:4.
Many experts consider this ratio to be crucial in determining health markers. Ideal eye, brain, and heart functions require a healthy ratio. Issues occur when this ratio of omega-3:6 is imbalanced because this produces far more omega-6 hormones in the body than omega-3 hormones. While omega-6-produced hormones promote inflammation, omega-3 hormones inhibit inflammation.
Molecular Structure of Fatty Acids
Ethyl ester fats are derived from concentrated fish oils, making it possible to achieve higher concentrations of DHA / EPA. However, algae oil is a natural product, so its omega-3 fatty acids structure is found in triglyceride form.

Algae oil vs. krill oil and fish oil
Algae oil vs. fish oil
Oily fish contains only 1% omega-3, while algae oil contains around 20% omega-3. Instead of catching 20 billion kilograms of fish for omega-3, we can also produce 1 billion kilos of algae for the same amount of omega-3.
A high-quality algae oil supplement, such as Testa Omega-3, contains enough algae omega-3 to make all three health claims with 1 daily capsule. With fish oil capsules, this is rarely the case.
Omega-3 fatty acids supplements are highly sensitive to oxidation. Since the Rubin Report 2011, we know that there are many issues with fish oil. Several other reports have also shown that most fish oils aren’t fresh, and that rancid fish oil is harmful to health. With algae oil, the algae are produced purely for the production of omega-3 algae oil. The whole process is controlled for optimal freshness.
Since many fish oil supplements are not fresh, you may sense an aftertaste with fish oil. This is not the case with algae oil.
All crude fish oil is contaminated with heavy metals, dioxins, and PCBs. Many industrial processes are required to remove this pollution and to ensure the freshness of a fish oil supplement. Algae are pure and free from ocean pollution, as they are grown on land with fresh water.
Fish cannot make omega-3 and only serve as the intermediary. The only reason that fish contains omega-3 is because of the algae in their food chain. So, why not bypass the fish and get our omega-3 from fresh and pure algae?
Algae oil vs. krill oil
Eight krill oil capsules are needed compared to only one algae oil capsule, to make health claims for the heart, eyes, and brain. There is hardly any omega-3 in krill oil capsules.
Krill oil contains phospholipids, omega-3s, and astaxanthin. Some studies have recorded a 40% improvement in omega-3 absorption for krill oil compared to fish oil. However, a high-quality algae oil supplement, such as Testa Omega-3 Vrill , contains 400% more omega-3 than krill oil. All health claims associated with krill oil have been rejected by health authorities.
Krill is caught with container ships in Antarctica. The once enormous krill stocks are decreasing. Several leading scientists warn of ecological disaster because krill is at the beginning of the food chain and animals such as penguins, seals, whales and many fishes in these waters feed off them.
Does algae contain more or less Omega-6 than fish(oil)?
Less. Per capsule, our supplements offer 28 mg omega-6 and 450 mg omega-3, a ratio of 1:16. In krill oil, that is 1:7, in sardine oil, 1:2.2, for farmed salmon, 1:4, herring, 1:5, and in anchovy oil, 1:10.
Krill oil vs fish oil
Is krill oil the same as fish oil when it comes to omega-3 supplementation?
When comparing krill oil to fish oil for omega-3 supplementation, several factors come into play. While both sources provide omega-3 fatty acids, they originate from different marine organisms. Krill oil stands out for its higher antioxidant content and potential for better absorption due to its phospholipid content.
Research suggests that krill oil may result in higher blood levels of omega-3s compared to fish oil. However, an alternative option worth considering is algae oil, which offers the best of both worlds. Vegan omega 3 provides ample amounts of DHA and EPA, along with antioxidants. Moreover, algae oil is an ethical and sustainable choice, making it a preferred option for those concerned about environmental impact.
Omega-3 deficiency
Am I taking in enough Omega-3, and why is this so important?
On the question of whether you need more Omega-3, we can be very brief: The chance that you are currently taking in enough Omega-3 is only 1 in 10. Scientific research has specifically shown that no less than 90% of the population has a shortage of Omega-3. Of this 90%, half even has a severe shortage of Omega-3.
Omega-3 contains essential fatty acids that are active in all body cells and body tissues. They help the body function optimally. To get these essential fatty acids, we depend on our diet. The body does not produce Omega-3 itself.
Why do we need (more) Omega-3?
Omega-3 contains essential fatty acids. To provide our body with it, we depend on our diet.
Because of the popularity of Omega-3, a lot of information can be found about the positive effects which DHA and EPA are purported to have on your body. The fatty acids DHA and EPA are active in all body cells and tissues and contribute to the optimal functioning of the body.
There are many health claims that emphasise the positive effect of Omega-3. However, many of these claims are not based on scientific research. Therefore, we will describe only the positive effects of Omega-3 which have been scientifically proven.
Research has shown that the fatty acids DHA and EPA have a positive effect on many different parts of our body and on our body functions. For example, we need these acids for the normal working of our heart and our brains. Our nervous system is also benefited by DHA, as well as our eyes. Furthermore, fatty acid has a positive influence on the maintenance of a normal blood pressure level.
Omega-3 sources
How do I get enough Omega-3?
In order to get enough of these important Omega-3 fatty acids, you will have to consume them in the form of nutrition.
The ALA fatty acids are found in different natural food products such as:
- Flaxseed (oil)
- Hemp seed (oil)
- Chia seed
- Rapeseed oil
- Different vegetables, such as purslane and watercress
The DHA+EPA fatty acids are found in different natural food products such as:
– Algae(oil), like our Schizochytrium sp algae
– Fish, e.g. herring, tuna, mackerel, sardines and eel
We notice some confusion when we talk about different sources of Omega-3. Often we hear that customers do eat a lot of flax seeds, walnuts or avocados and therefore really need no or only a few supplements. They are all super healthy and a very good addition to the Omega-3 intake, but is that enough?!
Linseed, walnuts and avocados only contain the Omega-3 fatty acid ALA. The body is able to convert ALA into DHA or EPA, but only in very small numbers. About 0.01% of the ALA ingested converts the body to DHA.
For comparison:
The Dutch Nutrition Centre advises adults to consume 2 to 3 grams of ALA Omega-3 fatty acids per day. The Dutch Nutrition Centre advises adults to consume 200 mg DHA / EPA Omega-3 fatty acids per day. One algae oil capsule from Testa Omega-3 contains 250 mg of DHA.
One algae oil capsule from Testa Omega-3 is equivalent to:
-390.63 servings of linseed of 28 grams *
-1000 portions of walnuts of 28 grams
-19,231 avocados
* One serving of linseed (28 grams) contains approximately 6388 mg of ALA fatty acid. 0.01% can be converted to DHA, either 0.64 mg. One algae oil capsule from Testa Omega-3 contains 250 mg of DHA. That means that you should eat (250/0.64) = 390.63 servings of linseed of 28 grams to match one Testa Omega-3 capsule!
