“Try vegan this January.” With that call, the Veganuary foundation challenges hundreds of thousands of people worldwide each year to eat plant-based for a month. Colleagues from our own team have joined too. Their experiences, and what you can take from them for your own diet, we gladly share.
Why join?
The reasons are as varied as the people. Our colleague Willemijn had been vegetarian for years and mainly wanted variety in vegan cooking: “I love cheese, the ultimate flavour carrier for me. But I know how much animal suffering sits in the dairy industry, so time to take that hurdle.” Colleague Menno joined to eat more consciously: “How often do you really read the label? This month I cooked noodles out of habit, only to discover there was egg in them. There is so much to learn about our food.”
The verdict: easier than expected
Cheese was missed most, on bread, on toast, on the cheese board. But the conclusion was mild: “Despite missing cheese, I have to admit it was easier than I expected. With inspiration from the Veganuary platform and cookbooks from my own shelf, I ate vegan the entire month. It is a matter of habit, exactly like the earlier switch to vegetarian cooking.”
Watch your nutrients this month
A month (or longer) of plant-based eating is very doable if you arrange a few nutrients deliberately. Vitamin B12 comes from a supplement or fortified products, and for omega-3 the familiar conversion gap applies: plant sources deliver ALA, of which your body converts only a small share into the active forms DHA and EPA. So you take those directly, from algae oil. The complete checklist is in a vegan diet without deficiencies.
FISH-FREE
Vegan omega-3 existed before the fish
Fish obtain their DHA and EPA from algae; algae oil is not a substitute but the original source. At 250 mg daily, EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function, and DHA to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision. All Testa products are 100% plant-based, down to the capsule shell.
January vegan? Your omega-3 is covered
One plant-based capsule a day, over 450 mg of DHA and EPA from algae oil.
Good for you. Good for the ocean.
Authorised health claims (EFSA) at a daily intake of 250 mg: EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function; DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision.
