Fish Free February: will you join us?

guido guido

Every February, a month worldwide is devoted to fish-free living: Fish Free February. We naturally take part, because our mission is to end unnecessary fishing. For omega-3, fish is entirely superfluous: the fatty acids are produced by algae, while roughly a quarter of the global catch is destined for the omega-3 industry. Why a fish-free month is more than a gesture, you can read here.

Why a month without fish?

A campaign month works like Veganuary: it makes a big change manageable. A month of consciously skipping fish shows you how many alternatives exist, and quite literally gives the ocean breathing space. Overfishing and bycatch put the ecosystem under pressure, and many fish are additionally found to contain contaminants such as mercury, PCBs and dioxins. Two good reasons to let the fish swim more often.

Documentaries that make you think

  • Seaspiracy (2021): on the scale of the industry and the question marks behind “sustainable” labels
  • Troubled Waters (2017) and The End of the Line (2009): on overfishing and its consequences for ecosystems
  • Artifishal: on farmed fish and the attempts to prop up stocks artificially

Not a cheerful movie night, admittedly. But whoever eats fish may as well know where it comes from.

FISH-FREE

Fish-free, without missing anything

The main nutritional argument for fish, the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, disappears entirely with algae oil: the same fatty acids, straight from the original source. At 250 mg daily, EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function, and DHA to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision. Joining is simple

  • Swap fish on your plate for legumes, tofu, tempeh or mushrooms
  • Get your omega-3 from algae oil instead of fish oil
  • Tell people you are taking part; awareness is exactly the point of this month

February fish-free, omega-3 still covered

One capsule of Testa Omega-3 daily: over 450 mg of DHA and EPA, without a single fish.

Good for you. Good for the ocean.

Authorised health claims (EFSA) at a daily intake of 250 mg: EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function; DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision.
