Fortunately we are not the only ones doing things differently. We regularly come across initiatives that inspire us, and we gladly share them. Today: seaweed as the hero of the story.
3D Ocean Farming
On the east coast of the United States, former fisherman Bren Smith grows oysters and other shellfish, and alongside them kelp: a large brown seaweed with remarkable properties. His method is called 3D Ocean Farming: vertical growing lines in the water on which seaweed and shellfish grow at different depths.
The result is threefold: fresh shellfish reach the plate, underwater ecosystems recover (shellfish filter the water, seaweed absorbs nutrients and CO2), and the harvested kelp serves as a sustainable raw material for animal feed, cosmetics and fertiliser. Producing food while restoring the surroundings: regenerative farming at sea.
