The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are extracted from them, and that is exactly where the problem grows: krill fishing is expanding rapidly, right at the foundation of the marine food chain.
Damage to the ecosystem
Organisations such as Sea Shepherd have been sounding the alarm for years. Krill plays a key role in the Southern Ocean ecosystem: whales, seals and penguins depend on it directly. Ships the size of football pitches enter Antarctic waters daily, and catch volumes have multiplied within a decade. Fishing at the start of the food chain puts the entire system behind it at risk.
Breaking the chain
The irony: krill does not produce its omega-3 either. It eats algae, the original source of DHA and EPA. Whoever takes the fatty acids directly from algae leaves the Antarctic entirely in peace, without giving up the distinctive properties of krill oil.
